Web Analytics collective Bangalore – After thoughts

with one comment

It was an amazing experience! at Bangalore Barcamp5, I was happy to see a great crowd for the Web Analytics Collective session i was hosting. Thanks to Girish, Uma Shankar and Naveen, everything went on pretty well and was on of the interactive sessions. Though i should agree i got great feedback on how to make these sessions better!

The Agenda was simple!

  • Introduction to Web Analytics
  • Using Web Analytics to get a front row look into hearts and minds of your customers and prospects
  • Web Reporting vs web Analysis
  • Web Analytics Vendors.
  • Open forum

Observations:

Web Analytics is gaining Importance: It was great to see how the participants were curious to understand how web analytics can help “measure, analyze and taking data driven decisions”. I would say Web Analytics in India now in a Knowledge gaining (understanding) phase, very soon it will become a inseparable part of any online business.

Web Analytics Data Capture Methodology: This part was probably discussed in detail, to understand the techniques used in data capture in web analytics. There was also great discussion on the privacy policy, the effect of the javascript on load time of the site, the latency factor.

Web Analytics Vendors, and their presence in India: The Myth that web analytics is only limited to Google Analytics was broken when the slide showing the Global web analytics players was shown, However it was great to see that there are some companies which are already using tools like Omniture, Web Trends and Unica.

Web Analytics Challenges in India:

  • Web Analytics Education: Web Analytics is new and to evangelize Web Analytics as a tool to create data driven decision culture, it’s important end users are aware about the Power of Web Analytics tools.
  • Web Analytics Reporting v/s Analysis: A paradigm shift is required to shift from understanding and using web analytics tools for reporting to using it for “feeling the pulse” of the web visitor and create a data driven decision making environment.
  • Web Analytics Process/culture: It was clear that web analytics is yet to find it’s place for being a integral part of online business.

Web Analytics as a career option in India: With Web Analytics gaining importance, web analytics is one the great career options in the IT related services, and it is for sure difficult to find experienced folks around India.

Apart from Web Analytics, i was obliged to meet some great folks, one of them was Amit Agarwal who’s known for his blog (Digital Inspiration) in the blogosphere.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the web analytics fraternity for the knowledge they share via forum and a special thanks to Dennis R. Mortensen who shared his Presentation for this event!

Web Analytics Industry shakeups

without comments

Last Couple of weeks Web Analytics Industry has been rocked with big news, starting with Omniture Acquisition of Visual sciences and the latest about Management Shakeups in Webtrends another leading Web Analytics service provider.

There’s been lot of discussion about both of the happening by the web analytics industry experts. You can follow both these discussions on the Web Analytics Yahoo Forum.

Omniture Acquitions Discussion Here

Meanwhile here is a excerpt from article from clickz about the Web Trends Management Changes.

Big news rocked the analytics industry for the second time in two weeks as WebTrends‘s board of directors ousted CEO Greg Drew and three of his top executives.

“We’re in a high growth industry, and we’re performing quite well and growing
double digits, but the board would like to see us do even better,” said Kopp.
“We’re fortunate to have a deep enough bench that we can make some changes.”

Released along with CEO Drew were Jason Palmer, vice president of product management; Tore Steen, vice president of business and corporate development; and Hamid Bahadori, vice president of product development and hosted operations. Replacing Drew as CEO will be Bruce Coleman, former interim CEO at Websense, while John Rodkin and Leo Chang will lead product management. Both joined through the acquisition of ClickShift last December.

Prior to the executive dismissals, several non-executive staffers fled the company recently, according to Eric Peterson, founder of consultancy Web Analytics Demystified. “Certainly that, combined with Greg, Jason, Tore and Hamid all being asked to leave… raises some concerns,” he said.
Peterson added, “This has been one of the weirder weeks in Web analytics ever. One of the biggest publicly traded companies gets acquired, and another lets its executives go. Now I’m afraid to wake up tomorrow and find out what else might be going on,” he said.
